There’s no shortage of good tunes coming out of the Modern Funk scene, which seems to be as strong as ever and thriving lovely. The Austin Boogie Crew are one of the few labels championing the scene and have recently released the fourth 7” on their ABC label and this time featuring Starship Connection.
The A-side features “Heartbreaker”, an amazing modern funk cover of the Zapp & Roger original driven by talkbox harmonies, cracking drums, thumping bass and slick halftime breakdowns with a twist which makes this completely their own. The flipside “Do It 4 U” is a sweet and sultry mid-tempo stepper laying in the cut offering declarations of love and devotion over a killer groove.
