Exile – Baker’s Dozen

It just under a month, Fat Beats is set to release their next installment in the Baker’s Dozen series and this time Dirty Science label head honcho, Exile is the man behind the boards and creator of this producers excursion.

“I was about five in the roller skating rink…hearing robot voices, synths, 808’s, and seeing people breakdancing to the beats. What were these beats? I was about eight thinking, what is this booming sound coming from these lowered trucks? It was beats.

Banging on electrical boxes, finger drumming on the desk at school… it was beats. From beat boxing to scratching a tom tom club record to tape cassette… it was beats. Turning the treble all the way down and the bass all the way up to feel the beats. Cutting out sound to create rhythms with a home stereo, Tape loops, one turntable, four tracks and one button playing one sample, it didn’t matter what you used all that mattered was the outcome of the beat.

Making music from nothing, pre internet you had to teach yourself or make homies with the local legend to drop some gems on their process of making beats. Now you can take classes on how to make beats. It doesn’t matter if you use a Roland ms1 or Mpc 2000xl, sampling records or sampling yourself playing the keys…get lost in the music, stay thankful and remember the feeling of why you do this. That is my process.”
