A few weeks back, Supreme La Rock and myself were invited to Toronto to be involved in the Discogs sponsored, Live Convention ’16 weekend which consisted of playing the Love Handle party on Saturday night and then a Sunday filled with digging for gems at the Cratery Record Exchange. The weekend was special for so many reasons but the main being that it was the first time in over a year that Supreme and myself exclusively shared the decks and worked the crowd at Love Handle. Toronto’s most official Boogie funk party welcomed us and our crates of Disco 12” and 7” selections in to do what we do and what went down was a full 2 hours of 1 for 1 needle dropping to keep the floor slick with Jheri-curl juice. Of course no weekend in Toronto would be complete without a pre dig meet up at Cosmos Records with the Seattle homies Jake One and Big Chan, the Cratery brothers and of course Aki pulling out the rare gems.
The weekend carried on with Sunday’s record convention curated by Cratery featuring handpicked dealers who stocked an incredible assortment of gems, rarities and must have crate fillers as well as dealers pushing vintage Hip Hop gear, graff and vinyl toys and no full day of browsing the bins would be complete without something to fill the hunger and local restaurant Thoroughbred did just that. The menu featured incredible jerk chicken and pulled pork tacos and signature alcoholic beverages with nods to some of Hip Hops greats like the Shaolin Iced Tea, C.R.E.A.M. Soda and Tings Fall Apart. Hands down and most would agree that Live Convention ’16 was the best record event to happen in a long time and it was an honor to help kick off the first in what will surely be a series of events to hit Toronto.
