Andre Wilson & The Chocolate Cake – Manilla Walk

There’s just something special that needs to be said about the 1970’s and the amount of killer funk that was coming out not just here in the states but abroad too and especially in countries like the Philippines where Pinoy funk was it’s heaviest. One band that had quite the potential to become a household name but never quite reached that pinnacle was Andre Wilson & The Chocolate Cake. Wilson, is is originally from Virginia found himself in the Philippines by way of his father who was stationed there so Andre made it his home and grew up on the military bases.

Formed during the late 70’s after his stint with Pinoy jetsetting funk band D’ Howlers. They opened for Gladys Knight & the Pips during their Manila gig, and was one of the top soul groups in the live scene. They also did a stint in Shinjuku Japan. The band cut one 45, before dissolving to different bands , one which came to be SSS Koffee also with Andre Wilson.
