Gone surfing and catching waves like a champ, be right back! That’s exactly the mode that I’ve been in since the new “Surf Tape” LP by Kyle Rapps arrived in the post and it continues to get better with every listen. Produced by non other than Dan The Automator who Rapps enlisted to provide the perfectly fitting beats for the occasion. In an era where there’s so much fluff out there, finding projects that are simple and to the point of delivering pure quality has become much harder to find to Surf Tape delivers.
An LP was always meant to be listened to all the way through, and Kyle sequenced the songs with care and purpose from the opening song “We Don’t Swim” to the closing “Black Bodhizafa” which features super group Coast Contra who bring their trademark energy and skills to the project. Surf Tape has another feature from Jarren Benton who absolutely kills it on “Gone Surfing”. This album is a MUST for any hip hop fan and is a stinging counterpunch to all the “there is no more good music being made”.
