It doesn’t happen often but there’s a certain element of surprise that exists when reviewing an artist that you mainly know of by name but have always been curious of their musical depth. What’s even more rare is when that artists is local, totally catches me off guard and makes me question myself on where have I been and why wasn’t I hipped? But social media is the connector of people and after hearing snippets of the new “Auroville” LP from Grimace Federation via Instagram, I was hooked. At first listen, I would’ve thought that this was a product of a European band with the spectrum of soundscapes that were present. The new LP combines prog rock and psych, jazz and electronic which often times gives it a library feel but with heavy deep rock influences and touches of spacy synth to tie it all together. Sometimes you can judge a book by it’s cover and in this case the Auroville cover art fits exactly the sound I was expecting.
The release date is June 9th and if you’re looking for something not of the norm to add to your ration, then I recommend you giving it a good listen.
