As a film and soundtrack lover, cinematic sounds have always been my favorite to enjoy and it’s always a bit of anticipation when I get word of something new coming to the pipe. Melbourne’s funk heavy super group and rhythm section The Putbacks wind things up to release their upcoming LP and lead things of with a very post soul, post jazz, cinematic mystery score featuring none other than Bilal on vocals. The new single “The Ways” flows deep into an abstract alternate reality where The Meters specialized in Sci-Fi soundtrack art and Dick Dale played guitar on Madlib records. Produced by Paul Bender (Hiatus Kaiyote), The Ways follows in the veins of some of our favorite house bands of past and present who dipped into cinematic territories ranging from David Axelrod and Lalo Schifrin to Adrian Younge and contemporary instrumental groups like BADBADNOTGOOD, Khruangbin and El Michels Affair. Known for their instrumental 7″ funk cuts and their collaboration with Emma Donovan, the forthcoming LP marks their first album as a quintet.
