It’s always a good day when a package arrives in the post from friends and fam that have brands and labels or are artists themselves and put their creativity out into the world for people to experience and enjoy. Arriving in the post today via Tokyo was a care package from the Slow or Fast brand filled with an assortment of merch from their debut launch. Slow or Fast is obviously cultural and something that will be seen and heard globally. And as founder Derrico Smith states it, “Slow Or Fast started in Tokyo, but it was never supposed to belong to one place”. As a DJ himself who plays music recorded by artists across from across the country ranging from disco to funk, soul to rare groove and points in between, it’s obvious that even without the use of a passport, he’s a well rounded and well traveled human being that connects people and cultures globally.
As someone who has spent much of his life moving around through different countries, different cities, different industries, and probably more airports than he’d care to count. Somehow, through all of it, records, clothes, music, travel, and the people around those things have always been the thread connecting everything.
That’s really where Slow Or Fast comes from.
Not because the world needed another clothing brand. It sure as hell didn’t. And not because we sat around trying to figure out what category was trending or what would look good in an Instagram ad. It came from the things we were already into, the places we were already spending time, and the kinds of people we kept linking up with along the way.
People who actually care about things.
The person who can spend half a day digging through records because there might be one incredible record sitting at the bottom of a box. The person who notices the fit of a shirt before they notice the logo. The DJ who knows the obvious record but would rather play the record behind the obvious record. The designer who obsesses over a tiny detail almost nobody else is going to notice.
Those people are everywhere.
After opening the care package, I was extremely blown away by the quality of each item and garment that was sewn with great care and the highest quality of materials. From the t-shirts to the coaches jacket, when a brand does it with great care and authenticity, there’s even more of an incentive to support them in that same authentic way.
