Ebony Diamonds – I’m So Lucky

Back in 2014 we got hipped to a lovely 7″ single by Ebony Diamonds with “I’m So Lucky” via our friend Russell Paine over at Super Disco Edits which instantly became a heavy spin for us over the years. After being rotated out of the play box sometime ago, the homie Quinn from Funk Trunk Records sent me a test pressing of the band which will see an upcoming release and has reignited my love of the song. After sometime being out of print, it’s exciting to see that it is being reintroduced and given a new spin on life by a local label and one that’s setting out to preserve music and Black culture. The label, Coliseum Records which is owned by Craig Belcher who has made it his business to procure a few things that have become essential releases in the past and it looks like he’s off to a good start with the Ebony Diamonds.

The Ebony Diamonds consist of Rodney Dorsey, Carroll Ellis Jr., and Ray Crawley who met while at Virginia State University over their love of music. In the early day’s, they began as as “Essence,” and did talent shows and small club performances. Shortly after, as “Ebony Diamond,” they recorded “I’m So Lucky” with producer Bernard Smith in 1975 which brings us to a timeless gem. What makes this edition of the 45 even more special is not only getting the vocal version but also the much appreciated  b-side instrumental as well as an accapella.

Essential in every way, so we’re highly recommending you grab a copy and immediately work it into your set!
