When we tell you that there is no shortage of great music coming out, mark our words as the stamp of approval and do yourself a favor and continue reading. The name Chris Lujan should be very familiar to you if you’ve been a continued reader at Nostalgia King and you’ll instantly know that his name is synonyms with quality and recommended listening which is exactly the case with his upcoming release under the banner of Life of Grime on the Nu-Tone Recordings label out of Freehold New Jersey. This is a pure case of when east meets west and Lujan brings his Bay Area flavor to the label.
Obviously inspired by the sounds of 90’s era Hip Hop, his latest project layers his signature soulful and cinematic instrumentation over top of hard-hitting, golden era hip hop-inspired boom bap beats. Although the golden era was all about sampling the old, Lujan creates an atmosphere of music today that makes for future sampling prospects of tomorrow which we love. Tapping in from the old to create what will considered new for the future generation digging producers.
“Producers like Prince Paul, Dan the Automator, the Jurassic 5 DJs (Numark and Cut Chemist), and Wu-Tang are huge inspirations,” says Lujan. “But, I’m not covering their songs, only copping the vibe. All with live instruments, no samples.”
