With all of the travels that we’ve been doing these past few months, we’re playing catch up on all of the new releases and promos that we’ve received and finally getting to hip you about them. One of our favorite jazz drops that’s been on heavy rotation comes from The Glades via Miami’s Tiki Tumbao label who has been flying high with some great releases and crate essentials. The Glades “Cash Only” b/w “Cool Out” is an organ jazz lovers dream! If titles tell a story then this double-sider is spilling the beans.
“Raw South Florida, Soul Jazz Organ Trio”
Miami’s dynamic jazz, funk and soul scene thrived from the late ’60s to the mid-’80s. South Florida, particularly Miami, was vibrant with jazz. Musicians thrived, playing three to five nights a week, thanks to enthusiastic crowds, numerous venues, and abundant talent. The scene buzzed with energy, fueled by stiff drinks and honest performances. And then it wasn’t.
And yet, a handful of players from that era persisted, keeping the music going in even fewer venues. One thing that stood out was that most were transplants to the Magic City. Northerners, Hispanics, and Afro-Caribbean – all drawn into the city’s Rat Pack cool.
A little over 20 years later, you can hear hands-down delicious jazz in Miami created by a trio of recent transplants. Guitarist Addison Rifkind and drummer Michael Duffy, hailing from Los Angeles, and NYC’s Adam Scone on the Hammond organ, have come together to create something special, The Glades. This is modern jazz. Reverential without nostalgia, tropical without appropriation, groovy and swinging without sounding forced.
