The fall edition of VinylCon LA was another one for the books and we couldn’t have asked for a better show! With this edition of the show we saw the space fill up with even more vendors to service the sold out ticket sales of diggers and attendees. As the doors opened on Saturday, the space filled in and the sound selections from our curated lineup of DJ’s beginning with Ezduzit who played the perfect opening set to get the audience ready for the day. Las Vegas’ own, McNasty took the baton and delivered an unexpected, but perfectly fitting psych 45 set of mind blowing tunes. The world knows Mike Wallace for his deep crates of library and soundtrack records and now as a musician and composer himself, but his crates expand way beyond that and his selection of modern soul, disco and boogie shows just how serious he is about music. For this edition of the show, one of the bucketlist DJ’s that I really needed to have on as a headliner was Thes One (People Under The Stairs)! Thes is a staple in the Hip Hop world, deep digger, producer and collector who got peoples minds and ears open with the opening sounds and heady records he played. Going from West to East, I took over from Thes for my set and then kept things on the East Coast with Philly’s Froz1 who is one of my favorite DJ’s in the world. Known for his deep knowledge of Philly area funk, soul and sweet soul, Froz1 played an immaculate set of that and more. If we’re talking about serious records, the lineup wouldn’t be complete without Hector Waluyo, owner of Twelves Records in Long Beach. Hector knows his funk, soul and latin and gave us the perfect blend which really showcases what he carries at the shop which is a must stop by when in LB. House music you ask? Who plays House at a record show? Well obviously we do at VinylCon and Aaron Paar came through with the classic Chicago and House records to get us ready for a Saturday night on the town.
As one door closes, another one opens and Sunday was just as exciting as Saturday. Dan Ubick opened the day with the perfect Sunday morning reggae set to ease us into the day with Philly legend, Tony Triple Double taking over and making a very rare appearance and dug deep into his crates that heads in discovery mode. When it comes to the sounds of library music, Am Sounds delivered the goods as we expected. Playing jaw dropping records that we have only heard but finally seeing mint copies was something else. Bucket list guest DJ secured for Sunday with non other than legendary DJ and producer, Easy Mo Bee who dropped everything from Jazz to samples to classic breaks which kept people on the edge of their seats wondering what was coming next. Another name that I really wanted to feature was DJ Ally O’Neil who I had been intrigued by for sometime now and who has an amazing collection of records and really loves soul music. Ally’s set was perfect for Sunday dropping original pressings of everything from S.O.U.L. to Natural High and everything in between while schooling everyone on some deeper cuts that she picked up while traveling. If Hector and Egon were impressed then that’s saying something! Closing out Sunday was DJ Randy Ellis, label owner of CQQL Records who played the type of records that kept Froz1 tuned in. The selections were immaculate and it’s always a good day when a DJ drops “The Burg”.
It was great seeing a who’s who cast of respected record collectors, diggers, dealers and producer royalty from across the globe in the building and VinylCon has really become like a family reunion. Having so many great records and that much knowledge in one room is always overwhelming but soaking it all up like sponges is essential. Thank you LA for another great show, see you in the spring!
