Escapism In Richmond Virginia

Traveling by train is always my favorite way to make my way around especially when I’m in Europe and Asia but it’s not often that I get to do so here in the states but on the few times a year occasion when heading out to play in Richmond Virginia, it’s always an amazing journey full of sites and food. This past weekend I made my semi annual trip out to Richmond to play at Get Tight Lounge which requires me to take the extremely early, 4am train to be exact Amtrak out of Philadelphia. The luxury of taking the train is that you never feel confined to just your seat or the cabin of a plane and being able to walk through cars and to the cafe car is always the perfect way to get up and stretch. The views while traveling through the Maryland, D.C. and Virginia areas are picturesque and peaceful which make the 5hr journey a pleasant one.

After arriving at Richmond station, the first thing I always seem to do is make my record shop rounds to get the early digs in to see whats filling the bins and what I need to bring back home. Food should be the obvious first choice but sometimes you just need to wait until the perfect place opens before diving in and that place is Get Tight Lounge which has a new chef and amazing menu. First order of business was of course the BLT with nice thick cut bacon and a “strawberita” (margarita) which hit the spot. After lunch it was off to hit a few more chops in the city, from books to records and even a gallery or two just to soak up everything that I’ve missed since my last visit back in October.

After the long travel day a nap is essential and with only a brief amount of time post nap and before tonights gig, food is a must to keep me going throughout the night and I needed to try the Virginia Blue catfish that I heard was amazing and it didn’t disappoint! Perfectly breaded and fried with a side of fries and a Gin & Tonic to start the night out perfectly. After a 6hr set and 5hr sleep it was off to the Amtrak station for the next destination.
