We love when we hear music that just feels honest, pure and authentic. Music that wasn’t created with an agenda, but the music was made with purpose and comes from the heart and soul of the musicians that made it. That type of music is a rarity especially when most artists are tying to fit into the industry of music, but that’s not the case with Every Other Sunday, a group of musicians that obviously just enjoy getting together in their limited free time to vibe and create together.
Benjamin Carey is a director of dads. A director of mostly dads who get together every other Sunday to play instruments together, work off the stresses of the week and make songs, and do it all again two weeks later. During the pandemic, a loose crew of friends started getting together when the coast became a little more clear to congregate again. Friends through decades of music obsession, Every Other Sunday consists of an ever evolving cast of characters who can spend 4-5 hours free to improvise on Sundays together.
The music on this album is 99% unedited, fully improvised, and very lightly arranged on the spot when we recorded it. We added no post production effects, left in all the flubs and “wrong” notes, and only occasionally overdubbed anything retroactively. In a time where everything is snapped to the grid, Every Other Sunday finds joy in feeling set free, recording directly to 1/4” reels on the Tascam 388, plugging out, unquantizing, and allowing our Sunday spirits to roam free. The music is the result of putting 5-6 novice musicians who have been listening, collecting, and DJing rare 45s and LPs from around the world for most of their lives into a lightly soundproofed basement room, and bring to the surface whatever comes to fruition without thinking too much about it, and letting it travel to ears beyond ours.
