Soul Supreme & Jay Mumford – Hell’s Gate Affair

When it comes to soundtracks and themes, nothing compares to the cinematic sounds that made up the backdrop to gritty New York City crime drama and action flicks of the 1960’s and 1970’s. Sounds that painted a picture of action and adventure, alleyway chase scenes and broad daylight bank heists and often times created by the most legendary composers like Lalo Schifrin, Dave Grusin, Ennio Morricone and others.  Well you can now add two more names to that list of greats with the addition of Jay Mumford and Soul Supreme, two names that we’ve covered previously here at Nostalgia King and both masters in their craft and heads of their class. Their upcoming LP, “Hell’s Gate Affair” takes influence from those gritty films and streets scenes and add’s their vision on what they would’ve wanted to hear in films like The Taking of Pelham 123, The French Connection, The 7-Ups and others.

“New York City, circa 1970. Crime’s up, money’s down and flower power is in the rear view mirror. Smoke filled diners, informants, garbage-strewn alleys and desolate beaches at the far reaches of city limits. The clandestine world of espionage meets the streets of NYC during one of its more turbulent patches, and the sound of The Hell’s Gate Affair sets the tone. Inspired by the masters of 60s and 70s library music and film scores, the record slides easily into those territories with music that’s as detailed in its arrangement as it is relentlessly funky and aggressive in its groove.”
